Highland Valley Farm

Highland Valley Farm

When Bayfield farmer Rick Dale of Highland Valley Farm wanted to start marketing his delicious blueberries in the Twin Cities, he came to me asking for a label that conveys “Bayfield.”

Many folks from Minneapolis and St. Paul vacation in Bayfield and Rick wanted people to see his berries in their local market and immediately associate them with beautiful Bayfield. Appropriately, the product was branded “Bayfield Blues.” Rick wanted to explore the options of a full color label, two color label and one color label. I did rough proofs of all three versions and he settled on two color printing to fit within the farm's budget. I refined the preliminary two color label, settling on green (agriculture) and blue (blueberries) for the color scheme. Since the berry containers are hard, clear plastic, I kept the artwork to a minimum to let the berries speak for themselves. The predominant feature of the label is the word "Bayfield" with the notion that it will trigger people's memories - "Oh yeah, Bayfield - I know that little town." Purchasing Bayfield blueberries connects them to a place they have been or heard of. Rick's blueberries are now available in several twin cities grocery stores and are selling like the hot cakes you can put them in. The "Bayfield Blues" label is on its second print run.
